Sir Quentin Blake can tell wonderful stories without a single word, but his partnership with Roald Dahl was made in heaven. The diabolical ingenuity of Dahl came into its own only when he wrote for children and created magical stories that have enthralled generations.

The first book Roald Dahl and illustrator Quentin Blake worked upon together was The Enormous Crocodile. Roald and Quentin soon became firm friends, cementing one of the most eye-catching and distinctive collaborations in children’s literature. Their work has been published in over 40 languages and today is considered a modern classic.

Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl was born in 1916 in Wales to Norwegian parents. After a distinguished career as a fighter pilot and diplomat during the Second World War, Roald settled down to become a full time author.

He first wrote popular stories for adults, then later retelling many of the stories he made up at bedtime for his own children.

He has been referred to as one of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20th century.

sir quentin blake

sir quentin blake

Quentin Blake was born in the suburbs of London in 1932 and has drawn ever since he can remember.

He is an English cartoonist, illustrator and children's writer and is probably best known for illustrating the books written by Roald Dahl.

Barbara Firth – You And Me Little Bear

Barbara Firth – You And Me Little Bear

Barbara Firth's touching illustrations of Martin Waddell's children's story "Can't you Sleep Little Bear", the first of their classic Big and Little Bear series, will be well known to parents and children alike.
I have always been biased toward illustrating natural history, so it was a joy to be able to draw pages and pages of bears.
It was with Walker Books that Barbara was able to do illustration work in her favourite field and she has gone on to illustrate many award-winning books.
She now lives in Harrow, England.

Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter (1866–1943) is still one of the world's best-selling and best-loved children's authors. She wrote and illustrated 28 books that have been translated into more than 35 languages and sold over 100 million copies.

Born in Kensington, London, she later moved to Hill Top Farm in Cumbria and on her death bequeathed it, along with 13 other farms and over 4000 acres of land, to the National Trust.

Being born a daughter of the Victorian upper-middle class, Beatrix had a typically restricted and often lonely childhood. She rarely spent much time with her mother and father, and, being educated at home by a governess, had very few opportunities to meet other children.

The young Beatrix was self-taught. She copied from nature or from books and drawing manuals, and studied the works of Constable, Gainsborough and Turner in the Royal Academy exhibitions.

Grateful that her education was largely neglected, she said it would have rubbed off some of the originality.

Anita Jeram – Guess How Much I Love You

Anita Jeram – Guess How Much I Love You

Anita is an artist. She draws things, and paints things, and makes things, and creates things, and rubs things out, and colours them in, until, they are just exactly how she likes them.

She is best known for her illustrations for the picture book Guess How Much I Love You, which was shortlisted for the 1994 Kurt Maschler Award, and is now one of the world’s best-selling picture books.

Illustrating was a labour of love, she says Every time I read this book, I want to cry. The story reminds me so much of my own son, who often plays this kind of game with me when it’s time for bed.

Dick Bruna

Dick Bruna

Dick Bruna was born in Utrecht in 1927 and is one of the Netherland's most celebrated artists.

He is best known for the children's books Miffy - a small rabbit drawn with heavy graphic lines, simple shapes and primary colors. His style is bright, colourful and minimalist.

We can normally obtain the art shown within 2-3 weeks either direct from the publisher or from stock in our other galleries.

Contemporary Art from local, national and international artists available in the gallery or online

The Maker of Rex the Mouse is Chris Kampf from Somerset. After studying Jewellery and Silversmithing in Leicester a long long time ago, he soon turned his hand to welding, producing a wide range of weird animals and larger pieces of furniture.

These were all destined for Camden, where he opened a successful shop, gaining a wonderful array of local and international clients, leading to several trips abroad to work on larger projects.

Moving to Covent Garden was his next move, where Chris stayed for a ten year stretch until starting a family and settling in Somerset.

Since the move Rex the Mouse has spread rapidly through a network of galleries reaching as far as Scotland and Northern Ireland. No one knows what his next move will be…not even Chris.

"JJ Adams is the Zappa or Hendrix of the UK Fine Art scene. I no longer walk past a gallery without looking in, he’s taken icons and buildings we know so well and added a little drop of LSD”

Artist Proof

An Artist Proof (AP) in modern practice is usually used to describe an impression of the finished work that is virtually identical to the “standard” limited edition. It does however have special value because of its extra rarity.

Normally there are no more than an additional 10 % of the edition size of the standard image produced as Artist Proofs. By convention, the artist does not sell these all at once. (Wikipedia)

Among the most popular contributors to British contemporary painting, the self-taught painter Jack Vettriano is one of Scotland’s best known modern artists, and a leading figure in British contemporary art. His formulaic style of genre-painting, typically set in the 1930s, either at the seaside or in dance halls, restaurants and hotels, is highly recognisable and very popular.

Born in Fife, Scotland in 1951, Jack Vettriano left school at sixteen to become a mining engineer. For his twenty-first birthday, a girlfriend gave him a set of watercolour paints and, from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint.

Over the last twenty years, interest in Vettriano’s work has grown consistently. There have been sell-out solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and New York.

His best known painting, The Singing Butler was sold at Sotheby’s for close to £750,000. He was awarded an OBE for Services to the Visual Arts and was the subject of a South Bank Show documentary, entitled ‘Jack Vettriano: The People’s Painter‘.

Brian Arthur

Brian Arthur

Artistic mastery, structural perfection and reverence for our vanishing natural world are the hallmarks of this noted British sculptor.

Whether gracefully fluid in motion or magnificently majestic in repose, his sculptures of marine life and birds serve as inspiring reminders of the living art that exists all around us. These sculptures are beautifully enhanced by the subtle patinas of browns, silvers, greens and ebonies embellished with high polished accents.

Chris Barela

Through careful study and documentation, Chris brings life to his favored subjects using the ancient method of lost wax casting.

Of particular interest to Chris, are the charming turtles that he often sees from his surfboard. The wisdom and playful demeanor of these sage elder statesmen who reside beneath the waves provide Chris with endless subject matter for his artwork.

“Each turtle has a unique personality; the way they cruise around at a leisurely pace is a reminder to us humans to slow down and enjoy life.”

A homage to the vast diversity of the natural world. Clive creates majestic wire tree sculptures from single strands of silver wire.

The beauty of this art is that no two sculptures are ever the same. There may be similarity of style between pieces, material used, or the type of tree being represented, but the way they are made means that every sculpture is absolutely unique.

Edge Sculptures

Influenced by style rather than subject, Matt Buckley has designed a unique feel to each piece with a dramatic mix of form, light and texture.

Each sculpt has been originally sculpted from clay, which allows the sculptor to be freer, giving the pieces that dynamic and organic feel, stylised by Edge Sculptures.

The finished clay sculpt 'masters' are then taken to be moulded, and each subsequent piece has been carefully hand cast from this mould using ceramic polystone, which allows for the faithful reproduction of detail and texture applied to the original sculpt.

The finishing touch is the skilful application of hand painting and finishing, which brings the sculpt to life.  The end result is a centre piece and talking point for anyone's living room!

I'll Know It When I See It
How To Buy A Painting

An English illustrator and cartoonist, Simon Drew is noted for his quirky punning captions, often featuring animals which he draws in a fine pen-and-ink style.

After reading Zoology at Exeter University, he trained as a teacher at Reading University and taught for five years in West Sussex. In 1981, he established his own gallery in Dartmouth for the sale of illustrations, paintings and the work of studio potters, which – since 1985 – has been short-listed by the British Crafts Council for its high standards. A Book of Bestial Nonsense appeared in 1986 and set the tone for a series of books that marry delightful images of mainly wildlife subjects with quirky, punning captions. He has regularly produced work for Friends of the Earth, including posters and stage designs.

Simon has always said that his aim is to follow the maxim of Paul Klee who tried not to “reproduce the visible but to make visible”. However he has usually ended up producing nonsense and has been described as “half artist, half wit”.

It has often been said that his work can be compared to the greatest art of the last century. In fact it has been compared to a lot of things. Every Season he produces a new list of designs just to make sure that no one can ever say they’ve got them all !

Please note that only Mary Rose Pottery is available from our online shop due to the high risk of breakages of the unique ceramic pieces during delivery.
