An English illustrator and cartoonist, Simon Drew is noted for his quirky punning captions, often featuring animals which he draws in a fine pen-and-ink style.

For artist Tim Cotterill, the shiny little frogs found in the secluded woods of his childhood in the English countryside were the beginning of a life-long fascination that has led him to be known as the Frogman. Read More

After reading Zoology at Exeter University, he trained as a teacher at Reading University and taught for five years in West Sussex. In 1981, he established his own gallery in Dartmouth for the sale of illustrations, paintings and the work of studio potters, which – since 1985 – has been short-listed by the British Crafts Council for its high standards. A Book of Bestial Nonsense appeared in 1986 and set the tone for a series of books that marry delightful images of mainly wildlife subjects with quirky, punning captions. He has regularly produced work for Friends of the Earth, including posters and stage designs.

Simon has always said that his aim is to follow the maxim of Paul Klee who tried not to “reproduce the visible but to make visible”. However he has usually ended up producing nonsense and has been described as “half artist, half wit”.

It has often been said that his work can be compared to the greatest art of the last century. In fact it has been compared to a lot of things. Every Season he produces a new list of designs just to make sure that no one can ever say they’ve got them all !

"JJ Adams is the Zappa or Hendrix of the UK Fine Art scene. I no longer walk past a gallery without looking in, he’s taken icons and buildings we know so well and added a little drop of LSD”

Artist Proof

An Artist Proof (AP) in modern practice is usually used to describe an impression of the finished work that is virtually identical to the “standard” limited edition. It does however have special value because of its extra rarity.

Normally there are no more than an additional 10 % of the edition size of the standard image produced as Artist Proofs. By convention, the artist does not sell these all at once. (Wikipedia)

Among the most popular contributors to British contemporary painting, the self-taught painter Jack Vettriano is one of Scotland’s best known modern artists, and a leading figure in British contemporary art. His formulaic style of genre-painting, typically set in the 1930s, either at the seaside or in dance halls, restaurants and hotels, is highly recognisable and very popular.

Born in Fife, Scotland in 1951, Jack Vettriano left school at sixteen to become a mining engineer. For his twenty-first birthday, a girlfriend gave him a set of watercolour paints and, from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint.

Over the last twenty years, interest in Vettriano’s work has grown consistently. There have been sell-out solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and New York.

His best known painting, The Singing Butler was sold at Sotheby’s for close to £750,000. He was awarded an OBE for Services to the Visual Arts and was the subject of a South Bank Show documentary, entitled ‘Jack Vettriano: The People’s Painter‘.
